Hidden Figures- A Proud Moment For My Sorority!

fullsizerender-117As I watched Hidden Figures with my girlfriends last weekend, I was so proud to say that all three phenomenal women featured in the movie are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.- the first Greek-lettered sorority founded by African-American women on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908. There is so much history that we don’t know about the contributions of Black women and Black people in general! As I watched the movie, I thought…why didn’t I know about their amazing contributions before?? It made me realize that I have to continue to educate myself about Black history because so much of it is “hidden”! I’m also glad that so many people went to see the movie opening weekend. It made over 20 million dollars in box office sales last week! If you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend it! You will laugh, cry, and learn so much!

Here are a few other things that are on my list to see, read, and enjoy this month!:

I definitely want to see Fences. I hear it’s very powerful and a must see!

I want to see Sing ! (I’m a big kid!)

I plan to read Jump by Steve Harvey. I listened to his other motivational book Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success so I can’t wait to “jump” into his new book!

I want to get Oprah’s new cookbook! I’m familiar with the Weight Watchers program and I’m interested to see the recipes Oprah is cooking at home that are point friendly.

Currently, I’m reading In The Company Of Women by Grace Bonney. One of my favorite bloggers, Glenda of So What To Twenty  recommended it and I am loving all the inspirational stories of so many creative business women.

That’s what I have on my list, what movies and books are on your list? Let me know in the comments!

As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I could not let this special day go by without saying Happy Founders’ Day to my amazing sorority sisters! 109 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service to all mankind!

It really was an excellent movie. I was also unfamiliar with this story about our Sorors. I plan on getting the book because I believe other women are profiled too.
