Natural Hair Update

On August 30, 2015, I did the “Big Chop”- I cut off all my damaged thinning permed hair and decided to go natural. I must say, it has been such a learning process. I am reading books, watching videos, going to natural hair conferences, and experimenting with lots of products. There is so much information out there now. I will share some of my favorite books and products in another post.
Honestly, it takes a lot of work to look like “I woke up like this.” LOL However, my hair is much healthier, thicker, it’s growing and I feel so confident! Sometimes in life you have to let go to gain more.

My hair growth in 4 months

Edgy Denim and Flannel

Flannel shirt-Forever 21, White t-shirt-Target, Jeans-New York & Company, Gray booties-Crown Vintage via DSW, Handbag-Junior Drake

The flannel shirt is everywhere this season. It is okay to be a little trendy and hip sometimes.  The flannels are inexpensive and so comfortable!  I prefer to wear it as a little cover-up. However, you can tie them around your waist or just rock it as a button down. Go ahead and be a little edgy!

Playful Polka Dots

Sweater-H&M, Scarf-Target, Skirt-Kenneth Cole Outlet, Black tights-Ann Taylor, Handbag- Kate Spade via Kate Spade Outlet, and  Shoes- Coach via DSW

I think you are never too old for polka dots and bright colors.  They are cheerful and fun. I rocked this outfit to church…  who says church has to be boring!

You can wear that faux fur to book club!!

Faux fur vest (with pockets, yeah!)  and sweater from Banana Republic, Jeans- New York and Company (super comfortable with just the right stretch) Shoes-Tory Burch, Handbag- Marshalls (it was only $25  y’all )

I can’t tell you how many times I would put something back on the rack because I said to myself, “Where am I going to wear that?” Well, now when I find something fabulous I just say, “I’ll wear it to book club!” LOL  Just wear what makes you feel great!  I love my book club and have enjoyed being a part of it for the past 12 years.  We laugh, eat, sip wine, and oh yeah…talk about the book.   I highly recommend having a circle of girlfriends you enjoy being around. Laughter is good for the soul and gives you an excuse to wear the fur and anything else you love!

My word for the year is “Brave”

I am big on vision boards to visualize my goals for the New Year. Last year I attended a workshop on goal setting and starting the year off right. In the workshop, we had to choose a word for the year that described our focus and goals. We even chose our own “theme song” to remind us of our motivation to stay focused throughout the year. This year, my word is “Brave”. I have always viewed myself as not very “techie” and I decided that I would challenge myself to be brave and learn new things. Hence,  the blog -LOL.  I have learned so much about myself in the last year. I am doing things I never thought I would do like: starting my natural hair journey (I’ll keep you posted!), leaving my job of 20+ years, and being more “tech-savvy”. I think about my childhood, motherhood, career and now this next phase as I quickly approach the big 5-0! I have decided to be brave and to do it in style! Lookout 2016 here I come!!

This is my vision board for the new year, I use it as a screensaver on my cellphone so that I see it everyday.

Tasty New Year’s Dinner

Honey gold coat from my “Honey”

My husband and I are not big on giving gifts to each other on Christmas. For us, it has always been about the kids, being grateful to God, and enjoying our family. Still, I can count on my husband of 23 years to give me perfume or a gift card. As you follow my blog you will see I love colorful coats!! I have coats and jackets in a variety of colors. I did not think my husband really noticed all my colorful outerwear until I opened a usually large box this Christmas. To my surprise, he got me this great honey gold coat that I love!! I was shocked when he said, “ I know how much you like coats… they had it in black but, I knew you would prefer the gold.” Awww, I guess he does notice! Still surprising me after so many years. It was perfect with my must have black jumpsuit for New Year’s Eve!
